Quotes to Encourage Perseverance in Single Moms

Making the decision to have a child is momentous.  It is to decide forever to have your heart go walking around outside your body.  ~Elizabeth Stone

It's not only children who grow.  Parents do too.  As much as we watch to see what our children do with their lives, they are watching us to see what we do with ours.  I can't tell my children to reach for the sun.  All I can do is reach for it, myself.  ~Joyce Maynard

From the article:

"Ten years ago, single mom Shawna Fennell began building Yahoo! stores from a home office in her living room. Her career in cosmetology no longer a viable option due to the physical strain of spending all day on her feet, Fennell looked to web design as a way to support her family and still flex her creative muscles.

After taking community college web design courses, she realized the necessity of finding her niche in this extremely competitive field and went on to earn her Microsoft Certification. Her first Yahoo! store offered software solutions for online purchase. Even at the height of the dot-com bust, Fennell saw the opportunity to sell online as a growing trend that would, one day, become an integral part of the way businesses connect with their market."

What's Your Story?

Are you a single mom with a story to tell?  I want to hear it.  If you're not comfortable posting under your regular ID, sign out and leave you story anonymously.

Single moms have some of the best life experiences and whether your story is positive or negative, the things we deal with on a daily basis make us stronger than 99% of the people we know.

My story, in a nutshell:  I married a guy I had known since Kindergarten.  Even though we had been friends, then started a relationship, and marriage seemed the next logical step, it was a disaster.  Two kids, money problems, and an abusive situation later, I ended up in a women's shelter.  I lost my business, my house, everything... I left with two baskets of clothes for the kids and I.

A year and a half later, I am the happy (cynical), well-adjusted (sarcastic) writer you have come to know and love.  I have a full time job, write for 4 blogs and 3 online magazines on the side, and support myself and our kids despite 5 months without child support.

I rock.

What's your story?

Germykins #1 and #2 and the Smash-Up Derby

That pretty much sums up my week so far.  ThingamaBob (age 4) has been sick with first a fever, then an ear infection, and finally a croupy-sounding chest cough, since last Monday.

Now, his brother, ThingamaJig (age 2) has the dreaded cough and diarrhea.  In the past 72 hours, I've had such thrilling phone calls at work as, "Ms. ThingamaMother, ThingamaBob just puked all over the school bus," and "Hi there, can you come get ThingamaJig?  He's destroyed three pairs of pants so far today and is out of diapers."

Yayyyyy.

Monday, I walked home from work for lunch to find my elderly neighbour and the very large Dodge truck she had borrowed to move some things strangely attached to the side of my Jeep.  So any spare time I might have had - that 20 minutes between scarfing down lunch and running back to work - has been spent getting estimates for the damage.

ThingamaGrandma has been pulling overtime duty helping me out so I could go to work (thank God for her, SERIOUSLY), but today was pretty much the end of the road.  I fell into bed at 8pm last night in a Tylenol and Gravol-induced coma and knew today was going to have to be Recovery Day.

Now if only Captain PoopsaLot (AKA ThingamaJig, if you're lost) didn't need a bath with every diaper change, we would be laughing.  Or sleeping... yes, sleeping for sure.
